Build a Customized Path
Through Multiple Scientific Disciplines
The Natural Sciences major is an interdisciplinary liberal arts program designed for students who want maximum flexibility in shaping their scientific education. The Standard (Multidisciplinary) Option is ideal for students seeking a flexible, interdisciplinary experience. This customizable track allows students to build a solid foundation in one scientific discipline while exploring other complementary fields.
Program Highlights
- Customize your BS degree across multiple natural science disciplines
- Work closely with a CGS academic advisor to design your ideal course plan
- Flexible blend of on-campus and online course options
- Build a strong foundation for careers in research, science communication, healthcare support, education, and more
- Ideal for students seeking interdisciplinary training without a set pre-professional track
Degree Requirements
Students must complete 120 credits (approximately 40 courses) to earn the Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences. At least 24 credits must be taken at the upper-division (1000-level. These upper-level courses may come from any portion of the degree plan, provided they meet the specifications of the track and general degree requirements.
For additional requirements outside the major, visit the General Education program page.
Standard (Multidisciplinary) Track Requirements

Design a curriculum built from two to four departments listed below. All courses must be natural-sciences–related and selected in consultation with your CGS advisor.
Track Structure
- Minimum of 36 credits chosen from approved departments
- At least 15 credits (about five courses) must come from one primary department—your disciplinary base
- Remaining credits can be distributed across one to three additional departments
- Course selections should reflect your academic interests and career goals and must be advisor-approved
Approved Departments
Students may select courses from the following areas:
- Anthropology (natural sciences-related course)
- Biological Sciences (excl. BIOSC 0100)
- Chemistry (only courses numbered 0110 and above)
- Computer Science (only courses numbered 0401 and above)
- Geology and Environmental Science
- History and Philosophy of Science (natural sciences-related course)
- Mathematics (only courses numbered 0220 and above)
