Natural Sciences BS – Earth & Space Science Pre-Education Track

Inspire the Next Generation of Earth & Space Scientists

Complete the courses needed for graduate teacher certification in science education.

The Natural Sciences major offers the Earth & Space Science Pre-Education Track for students preparing to enter graduate-level teacher certification programs, such as Pitt’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Science Education (Earth & Space Science). This track provides a 45-credit pre-education plan designed collaboratively with the School of Education and integrates core science courses with education foundations.

Completion of these prerequisites does not guarantee acceptance into Pitt’s School of Education programs.

Program Highlights

  • 45-credit pre-education plan combining Earth & Space science with educational coursework
  • Prepares students for the MAT in Science Education (Earth & Space Science) at Pitt
  • Flexible combination of geology, physics, astronomy, chemistry, and math courses
  • Build a strong foundation for teaching careers in middle and high school science classrooms

Degree Requirements

Students must complete 120 credits (approximately 40 courses) to earn the Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences. At least 24 credits must be upper-division (1000-level). These courses may come from any portion of the degree plan, provided they meet the track and general degree requirements.

For additional requirements outside the major, visit the General Education program page.

Admission Recommendations

  • The School of Education recommends a minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA for all teacher certificate programs. Consult the School of Education Admissions page.
