CGS Online Application Instructions

To be considered for admission to the College of General Studies please log in to the CGS online application and be prepared to complete the following steps. Prior to applying, you may want to take a look at the course catalog and financial aid.

1) Complete the online College of General Studies application
Your application cannot be submitted until all required questions are completed, all required documents are uploaded, and the application is signed. Incomplete or inaccurate information will delay the processing of your application. Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing. 

2) Submit additional materials 

Transcripts (Mandatory):

All applicants must submit official college transcripts with their application. If you attended Pitt, you will not need to submit a Pitt transcript as part of your application. If you are a certificate applicant with no college experience, official high school transcripts are required. 

Electronic copies of transcripts must be uploaded prior to submitting an online application. Please request an electronic copy of your transcript from your school and upload it to your application as a PDF file. Scanned PDF or JPEG files of paper transcripts are also acceptable as long as they are readable – documents that are not clearly legible will not be accepted and must be resubmitted. Grade reports, advising transcripts, or academic progress reports will not be accepted in lieu of a transcript.  If you have any questions about file uploads, please call 412-624-6600 or email 

Note: Departments may require you to submit a copy of your transcripts to verify prerequisites. Please keep a personal copy for your records.

Personal Essay (Optional):

The Personal Essay is optional. Applicants are encouraged to complete the personal essay if they do not meet the admissions criteria for the College of General Studies. Post Baccalaureate students do not need to complete a personal essay..


3) Pay the $45 non-refundable application fee* 
The application fee may be paid by Visa or MasterCard online. If you do not pay the fee when the application is submitted, you can pay by credit card over the phone at 412-624-6600 or in person by credit card or check at the College of General Studies front desk at 1400 Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Pittsburgh, PA 15260. 

*Fee waivers are available for the following populations

  • Individuals who have served in the United States Armed Forces
  • Individuals who are currently enrolled at Pitt
  • Individuals who have graduated from Pitt within the last 3 academic terms (fall, spring, and summer).

Please note, fee waivers do not apply to Pitt Staff, Study Abroad and Summer Language Institute unless any of the above criteria or met.
