Hyunjung Shim, PhD

Dr. Hyunjung Shim earned her Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Cincinnati in 2023. Her research centers on victimology, routine activities theory, and crime prevention. Specifically, she focuses on factors that prevent crimes, such as guardianship from home, family, friends, and romantic partners, as well as routines that keep people away from risky facilities and victimization risks. Prior to joining the LCJS program, she taught Criminal Justice Statistics and Crime Prevention at the University of Cincinnati, and she worked with the United Nations on Drugs and Crime as a research intern. Her most recent research agenda involves examining racial/ethnic disparities in crime victimization in the U.S. and testing the shielded routines hypothesis.
