The Law, Criminal Justice, and Society (LCJS) major explores how law and the justice system shape, and are shaped by, society. You’ll build a strong foundation in criminal law, criminology, and criminal justice ethics while studying issues such as forensics, cybercrime, legal psychology, law enforcement, corrections, and civil rights.
This interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts program prepares you for graduate study and careers in law, public policy, advocacy, and justice-focused professions serving diverse communities.
Program Highlights
- Bachelor of Arts degree, jointly offered by the Dietrich School and the College of General Studies
- On-campus format with select online course options
- Internship not required, but strongly encouraged
- Typically completed in 2–4 years depending on transfer credits and course load
- Transfer credits available for approved police academy certification (see curriculum for details)

What You Can Do With This Degree
An LCJS degree prepares students for careers across criminal justice systems, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and graduate or professional study in law and social sciences.
- Police Officer: Protect communities and enforce laws to support public safety
- Crime Analyst: Use data to understand crime patterns and inform policy and investigations
- Legal Advocate: Support individuals navigating the legal system, including victims and underserved populations
- Policy Analyst: Research and develop policies that address criminal justice and social equity
- Probation Officer: Support rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals on probation
- Social Justice Advocate: Work toward systemic change and greater equity in justice systems

Advanced Degree Option
Master of Studies in Law (MSL)
Students in the Law, Criminal Justice, and Society (LCJS) major* in the College of General Studies may obtain the MSL degree in a program where credits earned in the MSL program also count toward the bachelor's degree. For eligibility requirements and further details, see the Early Admission to Graduate Study.
*Pending acceptance to the School of Law — completion of prerequisites does not guarantee acceptance.
