External Transfer Students

Students Coming From Outside the University of Pittsburgh:

The College of General Studies accepts most credits from regionally accredited colleges and universities.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Up to 75% of the credits required for the degree may be transferred from other accredited institutions.
  • At least 50% of the credits required in the major and official minor must be earned in the College of General Studies.
  • Minimum credits to graduate: 120 undergraduate credits.

Grade Requirements

  • Transfer credits are generally accepted from courses with a grade of C or better.
  • Courses must be college-level (not remedial) and correspond to a CGS course in content and credit value.
  • Pass/Fail courses may be accepted if a “P” grade corresponds to a grade of C or better.

Transfer Guidelines and Other Considerations

  • Successful applicants typically have a strong record of previous college study.
  • Consult the Transfer Credit/GPA Guidelines through the University’s Office of Admissions for recommended standards.
  • Meeting the guidelines does not guarantee admission, nor does failing to meet them preclude admission.

Non-Academic Factors

Additional consideration may be given to applicants who:

  • Are adult students and/or veterans
  • Have significant work-related experience
  • Possess particular outstanding talents

How to Apply

  1. Choose a degree program: Browse CGS degree programs and select a results-oriented major. Note: Some majors have specific admission requirements.
