Ready to Find an Internship?

An internship is a great way to connect what you’re learning in the classroom with real-world experience. Start planning early, explore opportunities that align with your interests, and work with your CGS advisor and career counselor to make sure your internship fits your academic goals.

The process begins with finding an internship and continues through site approval, completing your internship agreement, and registering for the appropriate CGS internship course.

Give yourself plenty of time to explore opportunities, connect with potential internship sites, and find an experience that fits your goals.

Look for an Internship

Start the process at least six months before the term in which you plan to complete your internship.

Discuss your internship plan with your advisor and contact CGS career counselor Carol Balk for assistance finding opportunities.

You can also search for opportunities through Pitt Handshake.

  • Complete your Handshake profile and Career Interests Survey.
  • Follow employers you are interested in working for.

Research the Site

Learn about the organization and internship before applying or interviewing.

  • Prepare questions about hours, responsibilities, dress code, and clearances.
  • Check whether you will need a resume, academic transcripts, and/or references.

Interview at the Site

Contact the site supervisor to arrange an interview and discuss the internship.

  • Discuss the expected hours, duties, and responsibilities.
  • Let the interviewer know if you are considering more than one site.
  • Confirm that the supervisor has agreed to oversee your internship.

Follow Up

Send a thank-you message after your interview to express your appreciation and reinforce your interest in the opportunity.

Register for Academic Credit

Once you have secured an internship, complete the approval process and register for the appropriate CGS internship course before your internship begins.

Complete the Internship Agreement

Complete the CGS Internship Agreement Form .

Have this information ready:

  • Your name and Pitt email
  • Internship provider/site supervisor name and email
  • Your CGS advisor's name and email
  • Your internship course and faculty sponsor

Important: Submit only one agreement and carefully verify all names and email addresses before submitting.

Enroll in Your Internship Course

Register for the appropriate CGS internship course with the approved number of credits.

Your internship must be approved by your Course Internship Instructor before the internship begins.

You must be registered for the appropriate internship course while completing the internship.
