Self-Designed Track

The Self-Designed track allows students to create a personalized academic pathway that aligns with their individual interests and career goals in public service. This flexible option combines coursework from the Public Service major and related academic fields to build a focused area of study tailored to each student’s aspirations.

Degree Requirements

Students must earn a minimum of 120 credits for the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in public service. Of this total, the major consists of 33 credits:

  • 15 credits of required core courses (including a 3-credit internship);
  • 18 credits in a Self-Designed track (selected in consultation with an academic advisor).

All students must also complete:

For additional degree requirements, see our General Education program page.

Public Service Core Courses (15 Credits)

All five courses are required.

  •

Note: This major requires that you complete an internship at a facility external to the University, and this facility may or will require a criminal background check, an Act 33/34 clearance, and perhaps a drug screen to determine whether you are qualified to participate in the internship. Additionally, in order to become licensed or employed, many states will inquire as to whether the applicant has been convicted of a misdemeanor, a felony, or a felonious or illegal act associated with alcohol and/or substance abuse.

Self-Designed Track: (18 Credits)

Students in the Self-Designed track may select approved courses from Public Service offerings, including courses within the Public Administration and Nonprofit Management tracks, as well as related academic departments across the University.

Students develop a written plan of study in consultation with an academic advisor. The proposed course of study must be approved by the program’s leadership and should represent a unique focus not currently offered through another Pitt major, minor, or certificate program.
