A College of General Studies (CGS) certificate will help you expand your skill set and enhance your marketability in today’s competitive workforce. You can enroll in a certificate program or pursue a certificate along with a degree. If you are accepted to a degree program after you complete your certificate, you may be able to apply those credits to your new program.
CGS partners with the College of Business Administration to offer a post-baccalaureate certificate in Accounting. You must have a bachelor’s degree in any field in order to be admitted to this part-time evening program. Students interested in the certificate should apply directly to the College of General Studies.
Undergraduate certificates typically involve taking six to 10 three-credit courses. Pre-requisites, curriculum, and admissions requirements vary for each certificate. Our interdisciplinary certificate programs represent collaborative offerings between different schools and departments at Pitt.
CGS offers 11 undergraduate certificate programs that can be completed on their own or in conjunction with a degree program, and one program, Leadership, that is open only to degree-seekers.
Current University of Pittsburgh students who are not already enrolled in CGS may apply to add a CGS certificate by submitting an application form online. Current CGS students interested in pursuing a certificate should contact their advisor.
College of General Studies students can enhance their degree by adding any of these certificates offered by The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and the University Center for International Studies.

Check with your advisor for the application filing form and deadline, and to be sure you have met all the all requirements for the certificate. To avoid a late fee, you should complete this process when registering for the term.

Please check course descriptions for prerequisites. Credits earned at other accredited educational institutions may be eligible for transfer. However, a minimum of nine credits must be earned at the University of Pittsburgh. Students must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average in all University certificate courses.
