James Talerico, MA

I began working as an adjunct professor at Pitt in the fall of 2017, teaching "Written Professional Communication" in the English Department for the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. A few years later, I starting teaching "Public Speaking" in the Communication Department, along with the course "Media Relations" for the College of General Studies. In 2022, I was offered a full-time position as a Visiting Instructor in the Communication Department.

I have a Master's Degree in Communications from Wheaton College in Illinois, and a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Speech from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

I emphasize in my classes the importance of strong, clear writing skills, and the value of articulate speech. Even with the introduction of AI writing tools, students must be able to think critically and assemble coherent sentences. Writing isn’t just words on a page. This art form is comprised of one’s thoughts, influences, passions, and culture—a reflection of one’s humanity.

My career started in the newspaper offices of The Pittsburgh Press and The Business Business Times as a reporter and writer. I then worked as a TV news reporter, followed by positions in marketing and PR, including serving as Director of Global Communications for Marconi’s IT Division.

About 20 years ago I fulfilled a dream of teaching full-time on the college level as an adjunct for several area colleges. In 2015, I was awarded the outstanding adjunct professor of the year at Robert Morris University.

I am honored to be teaching at Pitt and love the students and campus.

I live in Franklin Park with my wife, Julie, and son, Samuel.
