Guidelines and Suggestions for Enrollment in BIOSC Courses

The Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences requires some information from students seeking enrollment in BIOSC courses. If a course has any pre-requisite, you need a Permission Number from the specific department offering the course and proof of having passed its pre-requisite(s).

Details about Permissions:

Although you sent transcripts with your admissions application, those courses aren’t posted in our PeopleSoft (PS) system. PS thinks you don’t have the pre-requisites and blocks enrollment.

If you have taken the pre-req course(s), then you can request a Permission Number to override the system requirement, but the Dietrich School requires evidence of these courses.

Permission Numbers are for specific sections. If a class has multiple sections (e.g. Genetics always has 2 sections), the Dietrich School staff need to know which section you want.

Even if a class is closed, a Permission Number to over-ride your “missing” pre-requisite(s) can be created. This way, if you are watching for a seat to open, or want to get on the PS Electronic Waitlist, you have the Permission ready if a seat opens, or to put yourself on the waitlist.

The Dietrich School can’t “hold” a seat for you in a BIOSC class. Seats in a CGS-specific section of a BIOSC class are restricted to CGS students until 2 weeks before the term. Once all seats are filled, any class is closed.

When contacting Biological Sciences for a permission number, please provide:

  • Your full name
  • Your 7-digit PeopleSoft Student ID number (not 2P number or user name)
  • The DEPT, 4-digit catalog number, 5-digit class number, and meeting times of the class (Example: BIOSC 0350 Genetics, class #12345, TH 1-2:20)
  • What courses you took elsewhere that might be equivalent to the pre-requisites
  • An electronic or paper copy of your transcript, with these pre-requisite equivalents listed
