The College of General Studies (CGS) at the University of Pittsburgh is designed to serve the unique needs of military-affiliated and veteran students. We have more than 50 years of experience working with veterans, adult learners, and others who want the personalized attention of a small community, and the competitive advantage of a degree from a world-renowned university.

CGS is home to the Office of Veterans Services (OVS) at the University of Pittsburgh. OVS is solely dedicated to serving veteran and military-affiliated students, as well as their dependents and spouses. OVS’ mission is to facilitate the transition of veterans from military to University life, support their ongoing academic success, and assist veterans, guardsmen, reservists, spouses, and dependents in receiving their military education benefits.

OVS strives to be a one-stop shop for student veterans and their dependents by offering:

  • Personalized pre-college planning: To help prospective students navigate the admissions process, OVS offers one-on-one pre-admission counseling sessions, and the University waives application fees for veterans and military-affiliated applicants
  • Assistance in navigating your military education benefit: Once in attendance, any late fees incurred due to late education benefit payments are waived, and veteran students are encouraged to learn more through workshops and info sessions, such as Maximizing Your Veteran’s Benefits. In terms of financial support, the University participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, and provides a grant to out-of-state veteran students.
  • An orientation to new veteran students, as well as a first-term success course to help veterans transition into academic life.
  • Career counseling from one of the top 20 career services offices in the country: Thanks to OVS' partnership with CGS, veterans have access to a dedicated career counselor. OVS also sponsors career-focused workshops, such as Ten Steps to a Federal Job and Military to Civilian Résumé Workshop, and hosts mini-career fairs with veteran-friendly employers.

CGS uniquely supports the academic success of all students with free tutoring, helpful workshops, and a dedicated, personal academic advisor who will work with you one-on-one from the time you start at CGS until the day you achieve your academic goals.CGS provides credit-earning courses designed to help you navigate the University and utilize all of the resources available to you, and provides mall class sizes and a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
