Second Degree Pre-medical Option

Your next step can launch your career in medicine.

If you are seeking a career in medicine or an allied health profession, you probably already know that the outlook is good: According to U.S. News and World Report, “…the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts net job growth of almost 3 million health care jobs in the decade ending in 2020, a 29 percent increase, beating every other group of occupations.”

You may not know, however, that as a student in CGS, you can complete the math- and science-based course work required for admission to the health professional school of your choice.

The pre-med track in Natural Sciences at CGS provides students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree—regardless of whether or not that degree included a science background—with the unique opportunity to complete the pre-requisite coursework they need and complete a second bachelor’s degree in as little as 39 credits. (Those who have already taken a few of the relevant courses may complete the degree with as little as 30 credits.)

Students interested in a career in medicine, dentistry, podiatry, or optometry, as well as those seeking graduate-level studies in an allied health field such as physical therapy or a physician’s assistant program, will find the courses, faculty connections, and support they need to meet their admissions requirements and perform well on the standardized tests required for admission to a health professional school.

As a Natural Science (BS) second degree seeking student, CGS provides:

  • Personalized Advising: As soon as you are admitted, you will be paired with an academic advisor who will serve as your personal guide while you earn your second degree. Your advisor will work with you to provide expert advice on what courses to take and when so you can achieve your goal in as little time as possible.
  • Health Professions Advising: CGS students have access to Health Professions Advising through the University Honors College. This office can connect students to the pre-health professions committee and provide support in choosing and applying to health professional schools. This office also provides detailed resources to assist students in preparation for a career in the health professions.
  • Affordability: At CGS, you get the competitive advantage of a degree from the University of Pittsburgh, a world-renowned research institution, for less than half what comparable programs charge. You may also be eligible for financial aid.
  • Flexible courses: Evening and part-time options are available so that even the busiest students can get what they need.
  • World-class faculty: Pitt’s highly respected faculty bring real-world experience to the classroom, providing a curriculum you can’t get from a text book. And as a student at Pitt—a world-renowned research institution—you’ll be at the epicenter of cutting edge medical research.
  • Transfer credit evaluation: Once admitted, we’ll carefully evaluate your credits from previous institutions to ensure that the maximum number of credits transfer, allowing you to complete your prerequisites in the shortest amount of time possible.

To help you map out your personal path, check out the minimum required courses for the health professional school of your choosing. (Some schools may have additional requirements, so be sure to check the admissions criteria for individual schools.) You can also view our current course offerings.
